Pedestals
What happened at Trafalgar? Who was Boudica? Was Guy Fawkes a goodie or a baddie? ’Pedestals’ is a history podcast, diving into the world of our national myths. We are surrounded by names, dates and statues, and these have often wormed their way into our make-up, for better or for worse, without us realising it. In each series, I take listeners through the events that have left us with this plaque or that lump of bronze, and attempt to tease out what forms they might have have taken in our identities. In this first season of Pedestals, we explore the Battle of Trafalgar, Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, and the place they have jointly taken at the centre of both the United Kingdom's capital, and its national story. In this episode, we look at the world of Napoleonic Europe, and Nelson's life and career.

In this second season of Pedestals, we follow the events of 60/61AD, as the Boudican revolt tore across the roman province of Britannia. In this first episode, we consider the image we have of the woman at its head, and the process of roman conquest and subjugation that set up this violent episode.
